General rules for packing boxes are:
MAKE BEST USE OF THE SPACE
MAKE SURE ALL ITEMS ARE CLEAN
CLEARLY LABEL BOXES CONTAINING CHINA AND GLASS 'FRAGILE'
Always fill a box. An over-full box will bulge and be difficult to stack, a part empty box is a waste of space and may collapse when other boxes are stacked on top. Do not pack too many heavy items in a box - remember, someone has to carry it! Get plenty of boxes from 1 Big Self Store. Using the standard boxes from 1 Big Self Store for all loose items will make stacking in the storage unit much easier and will help you make best use of the space. Always clearly label boxes as to the contents and from which room the contents came.
Clothing & linen should be carefully folded and stored in boxes, drawers or suitcases. Make sure all items are clean. Any residue of dirt or food could cause mould. Some clothes, etc, should be stored hanging to prevent creasing. 1 Big Self Store has special wardrobe boxes, with built-in hanging rails available.
China and Glass should be well wrapped, with a layer of packing both at the top & bottom of the box. Nest cups and bowls, & put plates and saucers on their edge. Put lighter items like cups and glassware near the top. Ensure that all boxes are clearly labelled "fragile" & do not stack heavy items on top of them. 1 Big Self Store has plastic "bubble wrap" that is ideal for wrapping glass and china.
Books should be packed flat to protect their spines, and alternate the position of the spines to keep the stack level. Books are heavy, so use 1 Big Self Store's smaller boxes, to ensure that boxes do not weigh too much. Do not pack fragile items in the same box as books.
Table lamps should be wrapped and placed in boxes. Delicate lampshades should be packed separately. They can be stacked together. Do not wrap in newspaper as the ink may mark the shades. Electrical and electronic items should be put in the original packaging where possible. If not available, they should be carefully wrapped (eg in 1 Big Self Store bubble wrap), prior to putting in boxes.
